Reach the Professional Level
That Fits You Best

Rising to another professional level starts with understanding how each level can be identified.

Find your comfort level, then begin doing those things that take you to that realm.

Level One: The Obedient Employee Professional

  • performs daily duties appropriately
  • completes reports on time
  • is on time to class and meetings
  • keeps accurate classroom records
  • teaches lessons directly from the syllabus or book
  • asks questions from the end of the chapter

Level Two: The Creative Curricular Professional

  • conducts a classroom which enthuses and encourages student learning
  • draws on the work and advice of others to prepare lessons
  • modifies suggested questions appropriately for the class
  • relates curricular material to daily living experiences

Level Three: The Activity Generating Professional

  • dynamically integrates curricular activities into the learning process
  • expands lessons and content into new and relevant activities
  • is willing to risk trying a new activity
  • imparts a sense of adventure into the learning process

Level Four: The Principle-to-Activity Professional

  • starts with known curricular principles and produces new lessons
  • modifies or changes lessons from year to year
  • strongly integrates cross-curricular components
  • enthuses students to risk trying creative learning experiences

Level Five: The Pioneer Professional

  • generates new principles or revitalizes existing ones
  • addresses the root aspects of learning
  • applies new ideas to curricular content
  • entwines curriculum with emotional and spiritual attributes of students

Obviously not many teachers will end up at level five. But all teachers should increase their professionalism beyond the first level.

We will argue on this site that visionary leadership at the administrative level will create a system of radical excellence in classroom leadership that produces outstanding “Higher Order Learning” in students.

This can be done by acknowledging and fostering the professional level attainted by all employees of the school. This driving force of increasing professionalism should become the focused goal of the truly visionary leader.
