Definitely NOT Collegiality
Dear Boss, Rememeber that speech you gave us about collegiality your first day on the job? What happened? Did you stop believing in what you said? I've noticed something lately. You haven't smiled as much as when you first came. Plus, you seem to stay in your office most of the time with the door closed. Do you have that many calls to make? Or does your back still hurt from that skiing accident? Remember that? Wasn't it fun when the whole faculty went together? Hard to believe that was two years ago. Are you ok? I mean, we don't see you that much anymore. I heard the school board really ripped into you last night about hiring that new guy in math who doesn't even know how to solve quadratic equations. We wish you'd asked us about him. Frankly, in the few minutes he sat in the faculty room the day he interviewed, some red flags popped up. We could have clued you in... if you had asked. Oh, well, maybe next time, eh? Or are you hiding in your office because of that thing with Ted? You know, the day you yelled at him for being late. Maybe you forgot that Ted has always come to school early. He's always there by 6:30. If you came by the faculty room for coffee like you used to, you would know that Ted's daughter is going through a bout with depression. That morning you spoke so harshly to him, Ted had stopped by her house to cheer her up. Guess it took longer than usual. Hey, Boss, the coffee is still brewed in the faculty room. Feel free to stop in, maybe even talk some baseball again. Speaking of being depressed, we'd like you to know the financial and enrollment crunch concerns us, too. Putting it bluntly, why are you fighting that battle alone? Okay, I know it's not alone. Your administrative council is in on the problems. But really, what do they know? Both of them have lost contact with the faculty and the kids. And kids are smart. They've learned to tell the principals exactly what they want to hear. Guess what! We hear most of the real stuff. I kinda suspect you have no idea what the real problems are. You know, if you asked... if you stopped by to chat... if you shared the global problems... if you listened to our thoughts... Who knows, maybe your smile would return. Finally, are you hurt because Francine didn't invite you to the spring barbeque at her house? If you notice, she didn't invite any of the other administrators this year either. I can't speak for her, but I do know the mood was completely different from here at school. We laughed, we joked. Bill even did some of his imitations. Like the old days. It was good to laugh again. Wish you were there. Like before.
